Getting your manuscript edited — whether by a freelance editor or one of BookBaby’s contracted editors— is one of the most important steps you can take to make your book the best it can be.
However, keep in mind that the file you get back from an editor may not be immediately ready for publication. Human editors, on average, achieve an accuracy rate of 90-95%. Depending on the original state of the manuscript, they may not catch every detail. They’re unlikely to look for formatting issues like misplaced hard returns, and there are different levels of editing that focus on various aspects of your manuscript. Most books go through multiple rounds of editing to reach a polished, publication-ready state.
After receiving your edited manuscript but before submitting it for formatting, it’s essential to take a final, careful look. This is your only chance to review and accept or reject the editor’s suggestions and ensure there are no lingering errors that could cause issues later in the process.
When you upload your manuscript for submission, a pop-up window will prompt you to confirm that it’s been fully edited, proofread, and is exactly how you want it to appear in print. It will also remind you that any post-formatting changes may incur editorial fees. By clicking “Yes, this is my final manuscript” and placing your order, you’re confirming that you’re satisfied with your content and accepting responsibility for any changes requested after proofs are issued.
Even if your manuscript was edited by a BookBaby editor, the final responsibility for the content is yours. We won’t be able to waive editorial fees for corrections requested after proofs have been created. Taking the time to thoroughly review your manuscript prior to submission will help ensure a smooth process —and a book you’ll be proud to share!
